Should I get a flu shot?

As summer comes to an end, the days get shorter, the temperatures drop, and leaves fall from the trees. This change in the weather ushers in another season—flu season. And each year, a vaccine is available for those who choose to get it. So, should you get a flu shot?

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the answer is yes. The CDC recommends that everyone 6 months and older get an annual influenza vaccine. It is especially important for young children, pregnant women, and older adults to get the vaccination, as these populations are at greater risk of influenza complications.

This year, the vaccine will contain antibodies against H1N1 (swine flu) and the two strains of influenza that are most likely to be in circulation. Influenza viruses rapidly evolve over time; thus new vaccines are created every year to combat the newest strains.

If you get the flu shot, you are not guaranteed to avoid this season’s flu virus. The CDC estimates that in years past, getting the flu vaccine decreased your chances of coming down with the flu by 60-70%. Combined with good hygiene and a healthy lifestyle, that is the best chance you have to avoid a potentially miserable case of the flu this season.
